Though not located directly in Sofia, Aqua Club Kotvata in Sapareva Banya is worth the trip. The easiest way to get there is by car or taxi. Open year-round, this complex is particularly popular among visitors heading to nearby ski resorts. In summer Kotvata attracts visitors who are looking for relaxation by the pools.

The facility boasts three large adult pools and three children’s pools with varying depths and playful designs. Additionally, there are contrast pools with alternating hot and cold water, as well as two stone plunge pools heated to 40°C, which are used for therapeutic purposes. These treatments are known to improve circulation, benefit the peripheral and central nervous systems, and aid in musculoskeletal and respiratory conditions.

AquaBankya in Bankya

Where to stay: Bankya is popular summer destination and although it is less than 20-30 min drive from downtown Sofia, it has its loyal fans who escape there in search for fresh air and emotions, close to the city but far from its noise and urban atmosphere. Zdrave Balneocomplex in Bankya

The Healing Beach in Ovcha Kupel

No list of Sofia’s mineral pools would be complete without mentioning Ovcha Kupel, one of the city’s most authentic and least touristy spots. You will not find this place in the travel guides and promo websites. Open annually from June to mid-September, this healing beach features three pools filled with hypothermal mineral water at 29–31°C. The water is known to help with musculoskeletal conditions, skin diseases, liver and gallbladder issues, inflammatory and traumatic peripheral nervous system disorders, and gastrointestinal problems.

This is not a party spot, it’s a place frequented mostly by older locals who appreciate the water’s therapeutic qualities. The setting is far from modern, seemingly frozen in time from decades past. Adjacent to the pools is the National Specialized Hospital for Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, which offers treatments such as modern tangentor baths, hydromassage, pearl baths, and aromatic baths, all utilizing the healing waters of Ovcha Kupel.

How to get there: The Ovcha Kupel beach is located in a busy living district in the city of Sofia, in the heart of park Slavia. The access is easy by metro, tram or bus.

Where to Stay: Ovcha Kupel and the surrounding residential districts near the beach form one of Sofia’s largest areas. While there are a few hotels, the neighborhood remains largely non-touristic. The public transport or taxis will take you to this place in no time.
